A lot took place during our first full week of school! We had many exciting activities going on in the classrooms that I hope your kids have been sharing with you. It is great to see the new relationships that are building and the smiles that take place when the kids are working or playing together.
We have another fantastic PTO event taking place tonight with our Back to School Bash. I hope to see you there.
Have a wonderful weekend!

This past summer, the Superintendents' Office put out work for all students to complete during their vacation. These 9 students completed the work and handed it into their teachers when they came back to school.
Great job goes out to: Jayce Lynn, Nathaniel Tripp, Lyra Hedlund, Daniel Simpson, Juliet Poglitsch, Aizah Shahan, Charlotte Werkheiser, Nariah Holder and Maya Perzan.

On Monday, September 15, we will be celebrating International Dot Day. Teachers will share the story by Peter Reynolds. The Dot is the story of a caring teacher who dares a doubting student to trust in her own abilities by being brave enough to “make her mark”. What begins with a small dot on a piece of paper becomes a breakthrough in confidence and courage.
The theme for the day will be dots. Let's see how many dots we can wear to school on the 15th.

Reminder: Tuesday, September 16 is our first early release day. If you are a parent of a Pre-K or K student, please make sure you meet the bus at the earlier time. If you are not there, your child will be returned to school. Thanks in helping us make sure that all our kids get home on time.
|
Our Open House will run from 6 - 7:15 PM in a "Meet and Greet" format. Feel free to stop in your child's classroom and learn about what they will be doing this year. During this time, teachers will not be talking about individual students. If you have questions about your child, feel free to arrange a meeting or phone call with yout teacher for another time.
When done visiting with your child's teacher, stop by the library to talk with our Special's teachers. The EG PTO and SEPTO will be in the foyer handing out information also.

Each morning, we offer breakfast to our students. If a student would like breakfast, they are able to walk to the cafe and pick up a grab-n-go breakfast bag. Breakfast is $2 in most cases. If you do not want your child to get breakfast because they are eating at home, please send a note to your child's teacher.
Universal free lunch is no longer available to all students. Families are encouraged to complete an application to determine eligibility for Free and/or Reduced Lunch. Applications can be completed on-line here. Otherwise, the cost for school lunch is $3.25 at the elementary level. Parents/Guardians may apply funds to your child’s account either online or by sending a check/cash. Checks should be made out to Newington School Cafeterias.

Reminder to send in a nut-free snack with your child each day. Our days are long and the kids do get hungry either before or after lunch. We have set a snack time into each teachers' schedule to make sure the kids have time to eat something if they are hungry. Our nurse will not be providing snacks this year.

We have run into a small issue at dismissal. If you are picking up a student and are in the drive up line, please do not get out of your car to get your child. This holds up the line. We try to load 3-5 cars at a time. Once they are loaded, they drive off and the line can move up. Exiting your car to yell to your child slows the process down for everyone. Thanks for your help with this.

Our school receives federal funds through the Title I grant. These are supplemental funds, which means they are used to provide additional resources to support identified students in achieving academic success in reading and/or math. Teachers communicate with parents/guardians of students who receive reading or math intervention and share progress throughout the year. We also collaborate with parents and families and seek feedback to improve services.
Parents/guardians also have the right to request information about your child’s teachers’ and paraprofessionals’ professional qualifications. All teachers at our school have been certified by the state of Connecticut as highly qualified. In addition, all staff members continue learning through professional development activities and are evaluated each year to make sure their teaching skills remain at the highest possible level. Furthermore, we will provide timely notice if a student has been assigned or has been taught for four or more consecutive weeks by a teacher who does not meet applicable State certification or licensure requirements.

K-12 students in Connecticut have the opportunity to enter the Competition and be awarded a scholarship of up to $20,000 to help pay for their future education! Dream Big! is brought to you by the Connecticut State Treasurer’s Office as Trustee of the Connecticut Higher Education Trust (CHET).
This year, we will be awarding $350,000 in CHET 529 College Savings Plan – Direct Plan (“CHET 529 Direct Plan”) account contributions to over 250 students in grades K-12 and technology prizes to schools. For the winning students, we will be awarding:
• Three prizes of $20,000
• 24 prizes of $5,000
• 240 prizes of $500
To enter, students are asked to answer a question by submitting a drawing or painting, essay, or video. Younger students will be asked to answer a question focusing on their future plans or a time they were inspired to do good, and older students will be asked about an experience or person that has impacted them and how that will influence their future goals.
Submissions must be uploaded by 11:59 p.m. on November 5. There is no cost to enter. For program details, rules and the entry process, visit this site.
