September is coming to an end!

It is hard to believe that September is almost over. Time is flying by. We have been involved in so many great activities. Our field trips are starting up and the kids are having a wonderful time experiencing new learning activities. We are looking forward to all of the great activities that we are planning for your children.

As we enter October, we have a couple holidays coming up. Our first one will be on Thursday as we celebrate Yom Kippur. These days are a great opportunity to relax and to learn a little more about what the holiday means.

As we progress through the year, always know that we are here to help you. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to call or message the teacher. You can also contact me.

Have a wonderful weekend!

The Blacktop has been lined!

This week, we had a painting company come out and paint up our blacktop. There are lines for the basketball net and ball shoot. We have 3 new 4-square boxes, 3 hopscotch boards, and 2 sets of cornhole. They will be coming back to put a sensory path in the center. The kids had a great time trying the new activities.

With Rosh Hashanah being this week and Yom Kippur next week, we are entering a time that is important to our Jewish community.

Here are a few resources that explain these holidays. Thank you to Becky Tubbs for putting these together.

NFD Visits EG

On Friday, October 10, the Newington Fire Department will bring one of their fire engines to school for our Pre-K, K, and 1st Graders. They will learn a little bit about fire safety and the work that our fire department does. They will also be able to climb in the engine to see what it is like.

Cafeteria Information

Each morning, we offer breakfast to our students. If a student would like breakfast, they are able to walk to the cafe and pick up a grab-n-go breakfast bag. Breakfast is $2 in most cases. If you do not want your child to get breakfast because they are eating at home, please send a note to your child's teacher.

Universal free lunch is no longer available to all students. Families are encouraged to complete an application to determine eligibility for Free and/or Reduced Lunch. Applications can be completed on-line here. Otherwise, the cost for school lunch is $3.25 at the elementary level. Parents/Guardians may apply funds to your child’s account either online or by sending a check/cash. Checks should be made out to Newington School Cafeterias.

Snacks

Reminder to send in a nut-free snack with your child each day. Our days are long and the kids do get hungry either before or after lunch. We have set a snack time into each teachers' schedule to make sure the kids have time to eat something if they are hungry. Our nurse will not be providing snacks this year.

Dismissal - When picking up in your car...

We have run into a small issue at dismissal. If you are picking up a student and are in the drive up line, please do not get out of your car to get your child. This holds up the line. We try to load 3-5 cars at a time. Once they are loaded, they drive off and the line can move up. Exiting your car to yell to your child slows the process down for everyone. Thanks for your help with this.

Things to Know

EG is a Title 1 School

Our school receives federal funds through the Title I grant. These are supplemental funds, which means they are used to provide additional resources to support identified students in achieving academic success in reading and/or math. Teachers communicate with parents/guardians of students who receive reading or math intervention and share progress throughout the year.  We also collaborate with parents and families and seek feedback to improve services.

Parents/guardians also have the right to request information about your child’s teachers’ and paraprofessionals’ professional qualifications. All teachers at our school have been certified by the state of Connecticut as highly qualified. In addition, all staff members continue learning through professional development activities and are evaluated each year to make sure their teaching skills remain at the highest possible level. Furthermore, we will provide timely notice if a student has been assigned or has been taught for four or more consecutive weeks by a teacher who does not meet applicable State certification or licensure requirements.

Lost and Found

Once again, we will have a Lost and Found rack in the cafeteria and can be accessed by all students during their lunch wave. Please remind your child to check the rack if they come home without an item of clothing. If you have any questions, please email bfigueiredo@npsct.org.

Changes to your child's dismissal

You can make changes to your child's dismissal by clicking the More Links Tab in ParentSquare. Here is the direct dismissal link.

Classroom Snacks/Celebrations

All classrooms are peanut/tree nut free. A snack containing peanut/tree nut may not be eaten in the classroom. At lunch, the cafeteria has designated tables for students with peanut/tree nut allergies. Parents of children with these allergies may opt to have your child sit at this table/s. Birthdays may be acknowledged with non-food items such as stickers, pencils, or other non-food items. Food is not accepted for birthday celebrations.
