Fall is upon us!

What a great start to the year! October is filled with so many great activities. We have Picture Day, Fire Truck Exploration, and many different field trips. We have a full week of school coming up before we head into a 3-day weekend.

As the weather gets cooler, please make sure your child comes to school with a jacket, sweater, sweatshirt, etc... We will try to go outside each day at recess.

Our next PTO meeting is Tuesday night at 6:30 in our Media Center. Stop by and hear all of the great activities that the PTO is planning for the kids this year.

With all of the new learning taking place, if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to call or message the teacher. You can also contact me.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Mrs. Serrano is a finalist for CT Teacher of the Year!

Mrs. Serrano, Newington's Teacher of the Year, has moved onto the final stage of the selection process for the 2026 Connecticut Teacher of the Year! A site visit was held at E. Green on Monday, September 29th, where students, parents, colleagues, and administration participated in focus groups to speak on her behalf. She was observed teaching on that day also.

Our fingers are crossed as we wait for the update!

Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur Resources

With Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, we are entering a time that is important to our Jewish community.

Here are a few resources that explain these holidays. Thank you to Becky Tubbs for putting these together.

NFD Visits EG

On Friday, October 10, the Newington Fire Department will bring one of their fire engines to school for our Pre-K, K, and 1st Graders. They will learn a little bit about fire safety and the work that our fire department does. They will also be able to climb in the engine to see what it is like.

Cafeteria Information

Each morning, we offer breakfast to our students. If a student would like breakfast, they are able to walk to the cafe and pick up a grab-n-go breakfast bag. Breakfast is $2 in most cases. If you do not want your child to get breakfast because they are eating at home, please send a note to your child's teacher.

Universal free lunch is no longer available to all students. Families are encouraged to complete an application to determine eligibility for Free and/or Reduced Lunch. Applications can be completed on-line here. Otherwise, the cost for school lunch is $3.25 at the elementary level. Parents/Guardians may apply funds to your child’s account either online or by sending a check/cash. Checks should be made out to Newington School Cafeterias.

Snacks

Reminder to send in a nut-free snack with your child each day. Our days are long and the kids do get hungry either before or after lunch. We have set a snack time into each teachers' schedule to make sure the kids have time to eat something if they are hungry. Our nurse will not be providing snacks this year.

Dismissal - When picking up in your car...

We have run into a small issue at dismissal. If you are picking up a student and are in the drive up line, please do not get out of your car to get your child. This holds up the line. We try to load 3-5 cars at a time. Once they are loaded, they drive off and the line can move up. Exiting your car to yell to your child slows the process down for everyone. Thanks for your help with this.

Things to Know

EG is a Title 1 School

Our school receives federal funds through the Title I grant. These are supplemental funds, which means they are used to provide additional resources to support identified students in achieving academic success in reading and/or math. Teachers communicate with parents/guardians of students who receive reading or math intervention and share progress throughout the year.  We also collaborate with parents and families and seek feedback to improve services.

Parents/guardians also have the right to request information about your child’s teachers’ and paraprofessionals’ professional qualifications. All teachers at our school have been certified by the state of Connecticut as highly qualified. In addition, all staff members continue learning through professional development activities and are evaluated each year to make sure their teaching skills remain at the highest possible level. Furthermore, we will provide timely notice if a student has been assigned or has been taught for four or more consecutive weeks by a teacher who does not meet applicable State certification or licensure requirements.

Once again, we will have a Lost and Found rack in the cafeteria and can be accessed by all students during their lunch wave. Please remind your child to check the rack if they come home without an item of clothing. If you have any questions, please email bfigueiredo@npsct.org.
