Elizabeth Green Elementary School

As we get closer to the holiday season, I want to take a moment to thank you for all of your support this year. We could not do what we do without the support and backing of each of you. By working together, we can make sure that all of our students are successful.
There were a number of great activities that took place this week. Our 4th grade participated in our In-School Field trip and performed different science experiments. We had our Student Council Inauguration with a fantastic turnout of families to witness it. We had a number of mystery readers and musicians who stopped by our classrooms.
I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

Each month, teachers nominate a student of the month. This student displays attributes of being kind, setting a good example for others, and is an active participant in their learning. We compile all the nominees and the staff vote on our Outstanding Student of the Month who is honored at an awards' presentation at Town Hall with Dr. Brummett.
We also recognize students in our Kindergarten and Pre K. They are our Shining Stars. These are our youngest students who are learning all about the expectations of Elizabeth Green Elementary School. In their short time with us, they have done a fabulous job completing their work, being classroom leaders, and having an overall outstanding attitude.
Here are our Shining Stars:

World Diabetes Day is celebrated annually on November 14th. It is the world's largest diabetes awareness campaign, reaching a global audience of over 1 billion people in more than 160 countries.
-
Purpose: The day raises awareness of diabetes and advocates for prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and improved access to care.
-
History: Established in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO), it became an official United Nations Day in 2006.
-
Symbol: The blue circle is the global symbol for diabetes awareness, adopted in 2007 to symbolize unity in the fight against diabetes.
-
Theme: The theme for 2024–2026 is "Diabetes and well-being," with the 2025 focus on "Diabetes and the workplace".
For this day, we ask that you wear blue in an effort to build awareness. Here is a presentation from Sandra Pereirra about diabetes.

Our school receives federal funds through the Title I grant. These are supplemental funds, which means they are used to provide additional resources to support identified students in achieving academic success in reading and/or math. Teachers communicate with parents/guardians of students who receive reading or math intervention and share progress throughout the year. We also collaborate with parents and families and seek feedback to improve services.
Parents/guardians also have the right to request information about your child’s teachers’ and paraprofessionals’ professional qualifications. All teachers at our school have been certified by the state of Connecticut as highly qualified. In addition, all staff members continue learning through professional development activities and are evaluated each year to make sure their teaching skills remain at the highest possible level. Furthermore, we will provide timely notice if a student has been assigned or has been taught for four or more consecutive weeks by a teacher who does not meet applicable State certification or licensure requirements.

Each morning, we offer breakfast to our students. If a student would like breakfast, they are able to walk to the cafe and pick up a grab-n-go breakfast bag. Breakfast is $2 in most cases. If you do not want your child to get breakfast because they are eating at home, please send a note to your child's teacher.
Universal free lunch is no longer available to all students. Families are encouraged to complete an application to determine eligibility for Free and/or Reduced Lunch. Applications can be completed on-line here. Otherwise, the cost for school lunch is $3.25 at the elementary level. Parents/Guardians may apply funds to your child’s account either online or by sending a check/cash. Checks should be made out to Newington School Cafeterias.

Reminder to send in a nut-free snack with your child each day. Our days are long and the kids do get hungry either before or after lunch. We have set a snack time into each teachers' schedule to make sure the kids have time to eat something if they are hungry. Our nurse will not be providing snacks this year.

We have run into a small issue at dismissal. If you are picking up a student and are in the drive up line, please do not get out of your car to get your child. This holds up the line. We try to load 3-5 cars at a time. Once they are loaded, they drive off and the line can move up. Exiting your car to yell to your child slows the process down for everyone. Thanks for your help with this.

Reminder: Our goal is to get outside each day for recess. As long as it is not too wet or cold, we will be going our each day. Please make sure your child dresses appropriately for the weather. Coats are needed when it starts to get colder. Thanks.
|
Once again, we will have a Lost and Found rack in the cafeteria and can be accessed by all students during their lunch wave. Please remind your child to check the rack if they come home without an item of clothing. If you have any questions, please email bfigueiredo@npsct.org.
|
You can make changes to your child's dismissal by clicking the More Links Tab in ParentSquare. Here is the direct dismissal link.

All classrooms are peanut/tree nut free. A snack containing peanut/tree nut may not be eaten in the classroom. At lunch, the cafeteria has designated tables for students with peanut/tree nut allergies. Parents of children with these allergies may opt to have your child sit at this table/s. Birthdays may be acknowledged with non-food items such as stickers, pencils, or other non-food items. Food is not accepted for birthday celebrations.
