The holiday break is almost here!

It has been a busy week. Our Winter Concert was a huge success. Mrs. Moebus-Poppa did an outstanding job leading our students through the weeks of practice that culminated with our concert. It was a packed house.

We had a number of field trips to the State Capitol and Playhouse on Park. Our students had a wonderful time learning about our state and seeing the show. State Representative Gary Turco visited with our 3rd graders today.

We have been involved in a number of activities leading up to the holidays. There have been holiday stories read and winter pictures drawn. Our students are excited for the upcoming break.

I will not be sending out a newsletter next week. I want to take a moment to thank you for all that you do in supporting our teachers and school. It has been a great start to the school year and I'm looking forward to all the great work we will do in 2026.

If I don't see you on Monday or Tuesday, I wish you all a wonderful holiday break. I hope you find time to relax and spend time with family and friends. Enjoy your break and have a happy new year!

Gr. 3 to the State Capitol

Our 3rd graders took a field trip to the State Capitol this week. They had an opportunity to tour the building and to learn a little bit about the history of the building and what work takes place there. They were able to meet with either State Senator Matt Lesser or State Representative Gary Turco. We were also lucky to have State Rep Gary Turco visit our 3rd graders today.

Artist Spotlight

This month, we showcase 6 of our young artists. Congratulations goes out to:
Grade 3: Francisco Collazo, Gabby Destefano, Lawrence Rodriguez, and Daphne Vecchio
Grade 4: Mikayla Moreno and Eamonn Trainor

Congratulations! Holiday Card Winner!

Martin Miranda-Pagan was choosen as the E. Green Holiday Card Contest Winner for this year. His holiday penguin was choosen from a number of great submissions. We are very proud of the work that Martin and all of our students did in entering the contest. To honor Martin's work, we have created a picture of Martin's winning card and have hung it up in the hallway outside the main office. It joins Lauren Figueiredo's card as she was last year's winner.

EG is a Title 1 School

Our school receives federal funds through the Title I grant. These are supplemental funds, which means they are used to provide additional resources to support identified students in achieving academic success in reading and/or math. Teachers communicate with parents/guardians of students who receive reading or math intervention and share progress throughout the year.  We also collaborate with parents and families and seek feedback to improve services.

Parents/guardians also have the right to request information about your child’s teachers’ and paraprofessionals’ professional qualifications. All teachers at our school have been certified by the state of Connecticut as highly qualified. In addition, all staff members continue learning through professional development activities and are evaluated each year to make sure their teaching skills remain at the highest possible level. Furthermore, we will provide timely notice if a student has been assigned or has been taught for four or more consecutive weeks by a teacher who does not meet applicable State certification or licensure requirements.

Cafeteria Information

Each morning, we offer breakfast to our students. If a student would like breakfast, they are able to walk to the cafe and pick up a grab-n-go breakfast bag. Breakfast is $2 in most cases. If you do not want your child to get breakfast because they are eating at home, please send a note to your child's teacher.

Universal free lunch is no longer available to all students. Families are encouraged to complete an application to determine eligibility for Free and/or Reduced Lunch. Applications can be completed on-line here. Otherwise, the cost for school lunch is $3.25 at the elementary level. Parents/Guardians may apply funds to your child’s account either online or by sending a check/cash. Checks should be made out to Newington School Cafeterias.

Snacks

Reminder to send in a nut-free snack with your child each day. Our days are long and the kids do get hungry either before or after lunch. We have set a snack time into each teachers' schedule to make sure the kids have time to eat something if they are hungry. Our nurse will not be providing snacks this year.

Happy holidays from the PTO.

Our book fair was a huge success with 300 free books going to our students and over $1000 worth of books going to classrooms and the library. We absolutely could not do this without your support.

Our next family event is Book Bingo on Friday 1/23 from 6p-8p in the cafeteria. There will also be family night at the Wolfpack game on 2/21. More information to come!

Please mark your calendars for our next meeting on January 5th at 6:30pm in the media center and on Google Meet. Childcare will be provided by the NHS Key Club. Online joining info can be found below.

Recess

Reminder: Our goal is to get outside each day for recess. As long as it is not too wet or cold, we will be going our each day. Please make sure your child dresses appropriately for the weather. Coats are needed when it starts to get colder. Thanks.

Lost and Found

Once again, we will have a Lost and Found rack in the cafeteria and can be accessed by all students during their lunch wave. Please remind your child to check the rack if they come home without an item of clothing. If you have any questions, please email bfigueiredo@npsct.org.

Changes to your child's dismissal

You can make changes to your child's dismissal by clicking the More Links Tab in ParentSquare. Here is the direct dismissal link.

Classroom Snacks/Celebrations

All classrooms are peanut/tree nut free. A snack containing peanut/tree nut may not be eaten in the classroom. At lunch, the cafeteria has designated tables for students with peanut/tree nut allergies. Parents of children with these allergies may opt to have your child sit at this table/s. Birthdays may be acknowledged with non-food items such as stickers, pencils, or other non-food items. Food is not accepted for birthday celebrations.
