Next Week Should Be Warmer!

Another week that we had trouble with the weather. A snow day here, a delay there - this has to change. Next week's weather shows a couple of days close to 70 degrees. Hopefully, we can see more weather like this!

It's hard to believe that we are a week into March. This month will fly by and April break will be upon us. We have a lot more learning to take place in a short amount of time.

We have conferences in a few weeks. I sent home a ParentSquare message with information earlier today. We will be opening up conference slots soon. Please take the opportunity to meet with your child's teacher and hear how they are doing.

Tonight, we have our Nail It! Cake Decorating and next week is our first ever "We Are E. Green" Night. I look forward to seeing you at each of these events.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Schoolwide Read-In -Monday, March 2nd

This past Monday, the whole school community met in the hallways to start the day and participated in a reading event. We spent 15 minutes reading from our favorite books. We were later joined by member of the NHS Key Club who visited each classroom and read stories about kindness. It was a fabulous experience to have our high school students reading to our students. Here are some pictures from the events.

March Students of the Month

Each month, teachers nominate a student of the month. This student displays attributes of being kind, setting a good example for others, and is an active participant in their learning. We compile all the nominees and the staff vote on our Outstanding Student of the Month who is honored at an awards' presentation at Town Hall with Dr. Brummett.

We also recognize students in our Kindergarten and Pre K. They are our Shining Stars. These are our youngest students who are learning all about the expectations of Elizabeth Green Elementary School. In their short time with us, they have done a fabulous job completing their work, being classroom leaders, and having an overall outstanding attitude.

Here are our Shining Stars:
Pre K - Charlie Doherty, Karter Higgins, and Rose Pellowski
Kindergarten - Isabella Costa, Nina Rivas, and Aston Allen

Here are our nominees and our Outstanding Student of the Month:
First Grade - Alanah Henry-Golding, Conor Scarlett, Valeria Roman, and Liam Chau
Second Grade - Hailey Mason, Landon Luszcak, and Anthony LaBranche
Third Grade - Hazel Joseph, Muhammad Umair, and Martin Miranda-Pagan
Fourth Grade - Mason Harvey, Brent Dale Layus, and Nyla Jones-Ruiz

Our Outstanding Student of the Month is Nyla Jones-Ruiz. Congratulations to everyone!

We are looking forward to our Nailed It! Cake Decorating event tonight. This event is sold out and only available to families who pre-registered.

The book fair is coming and we need volunteers! Please see the Parent Square post here for the schedule. Each volunteer will receive five scholastic dollars to be used at the spring fair for every shift worked and training will be provided.

Welcome to our Raise Craze fundraiser! This is a unique way for us to raise money for our school while making an impact in our community. We officially kick off on Tuesday 3/3 with a Be Kind and Do the Right Thing Assembly. During this fundraiser, students will ask friends and family for donations via the online Raise Craze platform while paying it forward serving others. This is a great way for us to teach our students the importance of kindness and gratitude while raising much needed funds. Every student can participate in Raise Craze by completing Acts of Kindness (AOK) so we’re aiming for 100% participation.

Please email us at egreenpto@gmail.com if you would like more information. The minutes from this week's meeting can be accessed here.

Lizzie's Spirit Wear Closet is a place where families donate gently used E. Green apparel they may no longer need or want. It is a free "shop" where anyone may browse and take what they need at no cost. Lizzie's Spirit Wear Closet will be available at PTO sponsored events throughout the year. Please email egreenpto@gmail.com to donate your gently used spirit wear items.

Please make sure you are following the PTO on Parent Square and on Facebook to receive the latest updates and information.

Recess

Reminder: Our goal is to get outside each day for recess. As long as it is not too wet or cold, we will be going our each day. Please make sure your child dresses appropriately for the weather. Coats are needed when it starts to get colder. Thanks.

Lost and Found

Once again, we will have a Lost and Found rack in the cafeteria and can be accessed by all students during their lunch wave. Please remind your child to check the rack if they come home without an item of clothing. If you have any questions, please email bfigueiredo@npsct.org.

Changes to your child's dismissal

You can make changes to your child's dismissal by clicking the More Links Tab in ParentSquare. Here is the direct dismissal link.

Cafeteria Information

Each morning, we offer breakfast to our students. If a student would like breakfast, they are able to walk to the cafe and pick up a grab-n-go breakfast bag. Breakfast is $2 in most cases. If you do not want your child to get breakfast because they are eating at home, please send a note to your child's teacher.

Universal free lunch is no longer available to all students. Families are encouraged to complete an application to determine eligibility for Free and/or Reduced Lunch. Applications can be completed on-line here. Otherwise, the cost for school lunch is $3.25 at the elementary level. Parents/Guardians may apply funds to your child’s account either online or by sending a check/cash. Checks should be made out to Newington School Cafeterias.

Classroom Snacks/Celebrations

All classrooms are peanut/tree nut free. A snack containing peanut/tree nut may not be eaten in the classroom. At lunch, the cafeteria has designated tables for students with peanut/tree nut allergies. Parents of children with these allergies may opt to have your child sit at this table/s. Birthdays may be acknowledged with non-food items such as stickers, pencils, or other non-food items. Food is not accepted for birthday celebrations.

EG is a Title 1 School

Our school receives federal funds through the Title I grant. These are supplemental funds, which means they are used to provide additional resources to support identified students in achieving academic success in reading and/or math. Teachers communicate with parents/guardians of students who receive reading or math intervention and share progress throughout the year.  We also collaborate with parents and families and seek feedback to improve services.

Parents/guardians also have the right to request information about your child’s teachers’ and paraprofessionals’ professional qualifications. All teachers at our school have been certified by the state of Connecticut as highly qualified. In addition, all staff members continue learning through professional development activities and are evaluated each year to make sure their teaching skills remain at the highest possible level. Furthermore, we will provide timely notice if a student has been assigned or has been taught for four or more consecutive weeks by a teacher who does not meet applicable State certification or licensure requirements.
