Bring on May!

The calendar has switched to May and we are now in the last full month of the school year. It has been an exciting week at E. Green. We had a number of field trips and our PTO sponsored Parker Jones who spoke to our students about kindness.

We have enjoyed a nice week of weather where we were able to get outside each day. We are looking forward to many more beautiful days for recess and lunch to be outdoors.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

Safety Patrol Promotions

This week, five members of our Safety Patrol were promoted to Sergeants. They have shown exceptional leadership, have run daily shifts on their own, and have been asking questions about how we can improve our work. Congratulations goes out to Amalese Brooks, Brynn Doherty, Liam Cyr, Mason Harvey, and Marley Majors.

Just Journal - Grade 4

During this week’s Safety Patrol workshop, Lauren and Kayla from Newington Youth Services hosted an engaging workshop called Just Journal. Students learned about different types of journaling and the many benefits journaling can have for mental health, self-expression, and reflection. We were excited to have more than 35 fourth grade students attend! Each student received a journal, pen, and stickers to take home and continue their journaling journey. Lauren and Kayla also shared information about the programs and opportunities available through Newington Youth Services at the middle school. Thank you to Newington Youth Services for such a meaningful and fun experience for our students!

Recess

Reminder: Our goal is to get outside each day for recess. As long as it is not too wet or cold, we will be going our each day. Please make sure your child dresses appropriately for the weather. Coats are needed when it starts to get colder. Thanks.

Lost and Found

Once again, we will have a Lost and Found rack in the cafeteria and can be accessed by all students during their lunch wave. Please remind your child to check the rack if they come home without an item of clothing. If you have any questions, please email bfigueiredo@npsct.org.

Changes to your child's dismissal

You can make changes to your child's dismissal by clicking the More Links Tab in ParentSquare. Here is the direct dismissal link.

Cafeteria Information

Each morning, we offer breakfast to our students. If a student would like breakfast, they are able to walk to the cafe and pick up a grab-n-go breakfast bag. Breakfast is $2 in most cases. If you do not want your child to get breakfast because they are eating at home, please send a note to your child's teacher.

Universal free lunch is no longer available to all students. Families are encouraged to complete an application to determine eligibility for Free and/or Reduced Lunch. Applications can be completed on-line here. Otherwise, the cost for school lunch is $3.25 at the elementary level. Parents/Guardians may apply funds to your child’s account either online or by sending a check/cash. Checks should be made out to Newington School Cafeterias.

Classroom Snacks/Celebrations

All classrooms are peanut/tree nut free. A snack containing peanut/tree nut may not be eaten in the classroom. At lunch, the cafeteria has designated tables for students with peanut/tree nut allergies. Parents of children with these allergies may opt to have your child sit at this table/s. Birthdays may be acknowledged with non-food items such as stickers, pencils, or other non-food items. Food is not accepted for birthday celebrations.

EG is a Title 1 School

Our school receives federal funds through the Title I grant. These are supplemental funds, which means they are used to provide additional resources to support identified students in achieving academic success in reading and/or math. Teachers communicate with parents/guardians of students who receive reading or math intervention and share progress throughout the year.  We also collaborate with parents and families and seek feedback to improve services.

Parents/guardians also have the right to request information about your child’s teachers’ and paraprofessionals’ professional qualifications. All teachers at our school have been certified by the state of Connecticut as highly qualified. In addition, all staff members continue learning through professional development activities and are evaluated each year to make sure their teaching skills remain at the highest possible level. Furthermore, we will provide timely notice if a student has been assigned or has been taught for four or more consecutive weeks by a teacher who does not meet applicable State certification or licensure requirements.
