Bring on May!

Another great week in the books. We had a couple of field trips, a pop-up book fair, and an amazing Literacy Night this week. We are days away from our spring concert which will be a show that you do not want to miss.

As we get closer to the summer vacation, please make sure that if you have any questions about your child's learning, you take the opportunity to reach out to their teacher. Over the summer, make sure that your kids are reading. We want to keep up their love of reading and we want to make sure that any gains they have had this year, don't slip away.

I wish all our EG moms a Happy Mother's Day. Thank you for all you do in supporting our school in educating your children. Enjoy your special day!

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

Mr. Doran

Thank you for Teacher Appreciation Week!

I would like to take a moment to thank the PTO for all of the wonderful treats that were set up for our staff this week for Teacher Appreciation Week. Your hard work and daily surprises helped to make this another wonderful week.

I would also like to thank Rachael Cisz who is one of our 1st grade parents. Her company, Serhant, donated a luncheon to our staff on Wednesday. The staff truly appreciated your generosity.

EG's Literacy Night

Elizabeth Green's gym was transformed into a magical woodland last night for our "Enchanted Forest" Literacy Night, a high-energy kickoff for our school-wide summer reading quest! Every student who attended went home with free books, a "Gnome-pal" mini-cutout of Mr. Doran to read to, and a "Path Through the Forest" map that combines reading with a townwide scavenger hunt for hidden gnomes. The night was packed with excitement, from CCSU students facilitating high-energy reading games and 4th graders sharing stories around a pretend campfire to Mrs. Serrano showcasing her "Read with Your Heart" collection. With a successful BOGO book fair and the Lucy Robbins Library on hand to promote community literacy, the event was one to be remembered. A massive thank you goes out to our incredible staff, parents, and student volunteers, including our hard-working NHS Key Club members, for making this magical evening possible!

4th Grade Leadership Club visits The Jefferson House

Our Leadership Club visited The Jefferson House. Their task was to work with the residents to help plant the flower beds in their courtyard. It was a bit cold so they did not have as many residents join them outside as they would have liked. However, they had the opportunity to join their "game time" inside. Our students were able to cheer on a group of residents as they tried to throw a ball to land in a hoop in the middle of a circle. The hoop was covered in sticky plastic to catch the balls. They had an amazing time and the residents were all smiles!

May Students of the Month

Each month, teachers nominate a student of the month. This student displays attributes of being kind, setting a good example for others, and is an active participant in their learning. We compile all the nominees and the staff vote on our Outstanding Student of the Month who is honored at an awards' presentation at Town Hall with Dr. Brummett.

We also recognize students in our Kindergarten and Pre K. They are our Shining Stars. These are our youngest students who are learning all about the expectations of Elizabeth Green Elementary School. In their short time with us, they have done a fabulous job completing their work, being classroom leaders, and having an overall outstanding attitude.

Here are our Shining Stars:
Pre K - Joshua Grimm, Brinleigh Cop, and Miguel Pilarte
Kindergarten - Noah Abraham, Christopher Cuas, Rayne Lusa, and Valentim Ramos De Andrade

Here are our nominees and our Outstanding Student of the Month:

Recess

Reminder: Our goal is to get outside each day for recess. As long as it is not too wet or cold, we will be going our each day. Please make sure your child dresses appropriately for the weather. Coats are needed when it starts to get colder. Thanks.

Lost and Found

Once again, we will have a Lost and Found rack in the cafeteria and can be accessed by all students during their lunch wave. Please remind your child to check the rack if they come home without an item of clothing. If you have any questions, please email bfigueiredo@npsct.org.

Changes to your child's dismissal

You can make changes to your child's dismissal by clicking the More Links Tab in ParentSquare. Here is the direct dismissal link.

Cafeteria Information

Each morning, we offer breakfast to our students. If a student would like breakfast, they are able to walk to the cafe and pick up a grab-n-go breakfast bag. Breakfast is $2 in most cases. If you do not want your child to get breakfast because they are eating at home, please send a note to your child's teacher.

Universal free lunch is no longer available to all students. Families are encouraged to complete an application to determine eligibility for Free and/or Reduced Lunch. Applications can be completed on-line here. Otherwise, the cost for school lunch is $3.25 at the elementary level. Parents/Guardians may apply funds to your child’s account either online or by sending a check/cash. Checks should be made out to Newington School Cafeterias.

Classroom Snacks/Celebrations

All classrooms are peanut/tree nut free. A snack containing peanut/tree nut may not be eaten in the classroom. At lunch, the cafeteria has designated tables for students with peanut/tree nut allergies. Parents of children with these allergies may opt to have your child sit at this table/s. Birthdays may be acknowledged with non-food items such as stickers, pencils, or other non-food items. Food is not accepted for birthday celebrations.

EG is a Title 1 School

Our school receives federal funds through the Title I grant. These are supplemental funds, which means they are used to provide additional resources to support identified students in achieving academic success in reading and/or math. Teachers communicate with parents/guardians of students who receive reading or math intervention and share progress throughout the year.  We also collaborate with parents and families and seek feedback to improve services.

Parents/guardians also have the right to request information about your child’s teachers’ and paraprofessionals’ professional qualifications. All teachers at our school have been certified by the state of Connecticut as highly qualified. In addition, all staff members continue learning through professional development activities and are evaluated each year to make sure their teaching skills remain at the highest possible level. Furthermore, we will provide timely notice if a student has been assigned or has been taught for four or more consecutive weeks by a teacher who does not meet applicable State certification or licensure requirements.
