Bring on May!

It looks like we are going to have a beautiful weekend. The sun will be shining and the warm weather will be here for the next few days. I hope you all find time to get outside and relax.

This past week was highlighted by our Spring Concert. Our 3rd and 4th graders did an amazing job performing. There is alot of talent in this group and we can't wait to see how far they go over the next few years.

Next week, we will have our Field Day. Please review the Field Day Tip Sheet that you received in ParentSquare earlier in the week.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

May Students of the Month

Each month, teachers nominate a student of the month. This student displays attributes of being kind, setting a good example for others, and is an active participant in their learning. We compile all the nominees and the staff vote on our Outstanding Student of the Month who is honored at an awards' presentation at Town Hall with Dr. Brummett.

We also recognize students in our Kindergarten and Pre K. They are our Shining Stars. These are our youngest students who are learning all about the expectations of Elizabeth Green Elementary School. In their short time with us, they have done a fabulous job completing their work, being classroom leaders, and having an overall outstanding attitude.

Here are our Shining Stars:
Pre K - Joshua Grimm, Brinleigh Cop, and Miguel Pilarte
Kindergarten - Noah Abraham, Christopher Cuas, Rayne Lusa, and Valentim Ramos De Andrade

Here are our nominees and our Outstanding Student of the Month:

Second Grade - Aubree House, Hadiya Khan, and Elijah Arno
Third Grade - Genevieve Read, Jasmine Nguyen, and Lawrence Rodriguez

Things to Know

Chromebooks and Summer Vacation

We have seen success with keeping the Chromebooks in the classroom each night. There has been a huge decline in breakage and the Chromebooks are always charged for the work we are doing.

This summer, all Chromebooks will be kept at E. Green and will be moved to your child's new teacher for the start of the year.

4th graders will bring their Chromebooks home for the summer as they will need them next year when they move to MKMS.

Accepting Ace - Mrs. Serrano's New Book!

My third book, Accepting Ace is now available for purchase on Amazon! Join Ace and his fearless friends as they show us how simple acts of inclusion and friendship can bridge any gap. I am honored to have written a book focussing on a student with autism. I feel a deep sense of pride in this work and hope it serves as a meaningful tool for building empathy and acceptance for all.

Recess

Reminder: Our goal is to get outside each day for recess. As long as it is not too wet or cold, we will be going our each day. Please make sure your child dresses appropriately for the weather. Coats are needed when it starts to get colder. Thanks.

Lost and Found

Once again, we will have a Lost and Found rack in the cafeteria and can be accessed by all students during their lunch wave. Please remind your child to check the rack if they come home without an item of clothing. If you have any questions, please email bfigueiredo@npsct.org.

Changes to your child's dismissal

You can make changes to your child's dismissal by clicking the More Links Tab in ParentSquare. Here is the direct dismissal link.

Cafeteria Information

Each morning, we offer breakfast to our students. If a student would like breakfast, they are able to walk to the cafe and pick up a grab-n-go breakfast bag. Breakfast is $2 in most cases. If you do not want your child to get breakfast because they are eating at home, please send a note to your child's teacher.

Universal free lunch is no longer available to all students. Families are encouraged to complete an application to determine eligibility for Free and/or Reduced Lunch. Applications can be completed on-line here. Otherwise, the cost for school lunch is $3.25 at the elementary level. Parents/Guardians may apply funds to your child’s account either online or by sending a check/cash. Checks should be made out to Newington School Cafeterias.

Classroom Snacks/Celebrations

All classrooms are peanut/tree nut free. A snack containing peanut/tree nut may not be eaten in the classroom. At lunch, the cafeteria has designated tables for students with peanut/tree nut allergies. Parents of children with these allergies may opt to have your child sit at this table/s. Birthdays may be acknowledged with non-food items such as stickers, pencils, or other non-food items. Food is not accepted for birthday celebrations.

EG is a Title 1 School

Our school receives federal funds through the Title I grant. These are supplemental funds, which means they are used to provide additional resources to support identified students in achieving academic success in reading and/or math. Teachers communicate with parents/guardians of students who receive reading or math intervention and share progress throughout the year.  We also collaborate with parents and families and seek feedback to improve services.

Parents/guardians also have the right to request information about your child’s teachers’ and paraprofessionals’ professional qualifications. All teachers at our school have been certified by the state of Connecticut as highly qualified. In addition, all staff members continue learning through professional development activities and are evaluated each year to make sure their teaching skills remain at the highest possible level. Furthermore, we will provide timely notice if a student has been assigned or has been taught for four or more consecutive weeks by a teacher who does not meet applicable State certification or licensure requirements.
