We had a wonderful start to the year! The kids were very excited to meet their new teachers and see which friends were in their class. I visited with each class and could see the joy that they were feeling. They are very enthusiastic in being involved in the activities and participating in the learning.
Next week, we have our first full week of school and then we head into the holiday weekend. We look forward to working with each of you in making sure your children have the best experience at E. Green.

- Our first PTO meeting, a meet and greet, is scheduled for Tuesday, September 1 starting at 6:30 PM in the media center. There will be a Google Meet option as well if you can’t be here in person. Information can be found below in our PTO section of the newsletter.
- Open House: Our Open House will be held on Wednesday, September 16. Come on in and learn more about what your child is experiencing at Elizabeth Green.
- Picture Day: School Picture Day will be Monday, October 19. Retakes will be done Thursday, December 3.

- Transportation routes are accessible in Powerschool. Additionally, the routes can be found here. Please examine this information carefully and call the office if you have any questions or concerns.
- For bus students, it is very important that all families work with children and neighbors to provide each child with a plan in the event that no one is at home when the bus arrives. Many bus stops are removed from the child’s home, and it is not reasonable to expect the bus drivers to “see” each child to his or her front door. Planning early in the year will prevent an unsettling situation for your child later. Thank you for your help. Also, our younger students (PreK and K) are required to have an adult meet them at the bus stop. Students will be returned to school for pick up if no one is there.

- Sick Policy - Student attendance is very important and vital to a student’s success in schools. However, there are instances when your child is required to stay home from school due to an illness. Please carefully review the guidelines below.
- Fever: May return when temperature remains under 100.0° for 24 hours WITHOUT the use of medication such as Tylenol, Ibuprofen, etc.
- Vomiting: May return 24 hours after vomiting has ceased without any dietary restriction.
- Diarrhea: May return 24 hours after last loose bowel movement without any dietary restriction.
- Conjunctivitis (“pink eye”): May return 24 hours after the first dose of medication, when the eye returns to normal, or until cleared by MD to return.
- Undiagnosed rash: May return after the rash is determined to be non-contagious by a doctor or if the rash disappears.
In addition, a child’s first 9 absences may be excused via a parent note (physical note or ParentSquare message). After 9 absences, a doctor’s note is required (unless it meets specific criteria established by the state). Extra Set of Clothes Please be sure to keep an extra set of clothes in your child’s school bag. It is very helpful for unexpected bathroom accidents, accidental food/drink spills, and/or nose bleeds. The Nurse’s office has a limited supply of clothes and you will be called if your child needs a change of clothes.

- Cafeteria Information - Lunch and Breakfast - Universal free lunch is no longer available to all students. Families are encouraged to complete an application to determine eligibility for Free and/or Reduced Lunch. Applications can be completed on-line here. Otherwise, the cost for school lunch is $3.25 at the elementary level. In addition, breakfast will be available beginning on the first day of school for grades 1-4. Breakfast for Pre-K and K will start on Monday, August 31. Breakfast is free for all students. Parents/Guardians may apply funds to your child’s account either online or by sending a check/cash. Checks should be made out to Newington School Cafeterias. For more information on how to add money to your child’s account, please see here.

All classrooms are peanut/tree nut free. A snack containing peanut/tree nut may not be eaten in the classroom. At lunch, the cafeteria has designated tables for students with peanut/tree nut allergies. Parents of children with these allergies may opt to have your child sit at this table/s. Birthdays may be acknowledged with non-food items such as stickers, pencils, or other non-food items. Food is not accepted for birthday celebrations. |
Our school receives federal funds through the Title I grant. These are supplemental funds, which means they are used to provide additional resources to support identified students in achieving academic success in reading and/or math. Teachers communicate with parents/guardians of students who receive reading or math intervention and share progress throughout the year. We also collaborate with parents and families and seek feedback to improve services.
Parents/guardians also have the right to request information about your child’s teachers’ and paraprofessionals’ professional qualifications. All teachers at our school have been certified by the state of Connecticut as highly qualified. In addition, all staff members continue learning through professional development activities and are evaluated each year to make sure their teaching skills remain at the highest possible level. Furthermore, we will provide timely notice if a student has been assigned or has been taught for four or more consecutive weeks by a teacher who does not meet applicable State certification or licensure requirements. |
The CHET Dream Big! Competition will return on August 19, 2026 and run through November 6, 2026! This Competition is brought to you by the Connecticut State Treasurer’s Office as Trustee of the Connecticut Higher Education Trust (CHET). Dream Big! is open to all Connecticut students in grades K-12.
This year they will be awarding $350,000 in CHET 529 College Savings Plan account contributions to over 250 students in grades K-12. With the help of a parent or guardian, students will submit an answer to a question about their dreams or how they could help their community.
This year, they will be awarding the following in CHET 529 account contributions: • Three prizes of $20,000 • 24 prizes of $5,000 • 240 prizes of $500
Each school that is represented by at least one student’s entry will be eligible for a random drawing for a technology prize worth $5,000 (a total of 10 schools will win a technology prize).
