We are entering the last few days of September. We have had a fantastic month of working with your kids and helping them to adjust to their new class and grade. I have been in every class this week and have seen some outstanding work. Your kids are putting forth a great effort, are using new vocabulary to explain their reasoning, and are working collaboratively to come to solutions. I am very proud of the work they are doing.
As we head into October, we have many exciting activities coming up. Grade levels will start heading out of the building on field trips. The PTO is setting up some fantastic family activities. Make sure you look for information coming home with your child so you are aware of what you need to do to participate.

Ms. Cloutier and Ms. Rioux's classes had a chance to see three different stages of a butterfly's life cycle. Students were able to hold caterpillars, chrysalis, and then watch the butterflies get released. |
Each month, we will spotlight a few students for their artistic ability. Mrs. Gajda has set up a couple displays as you enter our building. Here are our artists.

1. Please remind your children to stop at the crosswalks and look both directions before crossing. They should look to the adult to tell them that it is clear to cross. We had a few students run right through the crosswalk without looking.
2. Please have your child exit the car on the passenger side so they can hop right onto the sidewalk. Students should not exit the vechicles until they are near the sidewalk in front of the school. We had a few students get out on the driver's side and this puts them in the way of cars that are passing by.

Reminder: Depending on the grade level, your child will have either a long morning session or a long afternoon session due to their lunchtime. Please send in a snack for them to eat during this time as they usually are hungry during these long periods of time. Thank you. |

For bus students, it is very important that all families work with children and neighbors to provide each child with a plan in the event that no one is at home when the bus arrives. Many bus stops are removed from the child’s home, and it is not reasonable to expect the bus drivers to “see” each child to his or her front door. Planning early in the year will prevent an unsettling situation for your child later. Thank you for your help. Also, our younger students (PreK and K) are required to have an adult meet them at the bus stop. Students will be returned to school for pick up if no one is there.

Sick Policy - Student attendance is very important and vital to a student’s success in schools. However, there are instances when your child is required to stay home from school due to an illness. Please carefully review the guidelines below.
- Fever: May return when temperature remains under 100.0° for 24 hours WITHOUT the use of medication such as Tylenol, Ibuprofen, etc.
- Vomiting: May return 24 hours after vomiting has ceased without any dietary restriction.
- Diarrhea: May return 24 hours after last loose bowel movement without any dietary restriction.
- Conjunctivitis (“pink eye”): May return 24 hours after the first dose of medication, when the eye returns to normal, or until cleared by MD to return.
- Undiagnosed rash: May return after the rash is determined to be non-contagious by a doctor or if the rash disappears.
In addition, a child’s first 9 absences may be excused via a parent note (physical note or ParentSquare message). After 9 absences, a doctor’s note is required (unless it meets specific criteria established by the state). Extra Set of Clothes
Please be sure to keep an extra set of clothes in your child’s school bag. It is very helpful for unexpected bathroom accidents, accidental food/drink spills, and/or nose bleeds. The Nurse’s office has a limited supply of clothes and you will be called if your child needs a change of clothes.

Our next PTO meeting will be Tuesday, October 6th at 6:30P in the Media Center. Childcare will be provided by NHS Key Club students if you would like to bring your children while you attend the meeting. Google Meet link will be shared in next week’s newsletter. Flyers went home this week for Villari’s Karate Class Fundraiser. An instructor from Villari’s will come to Elizabeth Green once a week for four weeks to teach half-hour karate classes right after school. The cost is $35/student and Villari’s is generously donating 100% of funds raised to the PTO. Classes will be 3:45-4:15P on 10/19, 10/26, 11/2 and 11/9 with a Graduation Ceremony at Villari’s Studio in Newington on November 13th. Families are responsible for arranging transportation after classes, there will be no busses. Spaces are limited, if you are interested you can sign up now here.

The drive runs from 9/1-9/30. Suggested family donation is $10 but any amount is accepted with gratitude. We accept cash, check (made payable to E. Green PTO) or Venmo @egreenpto. The two classes that have the highest percentage of participation will win ice cream parties in October!

Cafeteria Information - Lunch and Breakfast - Universal free lunch is no longer available to all students. Families are encouraged to complete an application to determine eligibility for Free and/or Reduced Lunch. Applications can be completed on-line here. Otherwise, the cost for school lunch is $3.25 at the elementary level.
- Breakfast is free for all students.
- Parents/Guardians may apply funds to your child’s account either online or by sending in a check or cash. Checks should be made out to Newington School Cafeterias. For more information on how to add money to your child’s account, please see here.

All classrooms are peanut/tree nut free. A snack containing peanut/tree nut may not be eaten in the classroom. At lunch, the cafeteria has designated tables for students with peanut/tree nut allergies. Parents of children with these allergies may opt to have your child sit at this table/s. Birthdays may be acknowledged with non-food items such as stickers, pencils, or other non-food items. Food is not accepted for birthday celebrations. |
Our school receives federal funds through the Title I grant. These are supplemental funds, which means they are used to provide additional resources to support identified students in achieving academic success in reading and/or math. Teachers communicate with parents/guardians of students who receive reading or math intervention and share progress throughout the year. We also collaborate with parents and families and seek feedback to improve services.
Parents/guardians also have the right to request information about your child’s teachers’ and paraprofessionals’ professional qualifications. All teachers at our school have been certified by the state of Connecticut as highly qualified. In addition, all staff members continue learning through professional development activities and are evaluated each year to make sure their teaching skills remain at the highest possible level. Furthermore, we will provide timely notice if a student has been assigned or has been taught for four or more consecutive weeks by a teacher who does not meet applicable State certification or licensure requirements.

The Chen Art Gallery will present “Perspectivas: In Honor of Gilberto Cárdenas,” an exhibition of Latino art curated by Central students.
The works included in “Perspectivas” visualize a journey through the experiences of Latinos and Latin Americans. The themes addressed by the artists include family traditions, religious faith, social justice, civil rights, and immigration.
Admission is free to the Chen Art Gallery at CCSU.

Barnum Financial Group will be hosting a college funding workshop for Newington Families at 7pm virtually. Topics that will be covered are: Need Based Aid Information, FAFSA vs CSS Profile, Tuition Discounting, Minimizing Student Loans and more. The CHET Dream Big! Competition will return on August 19, 2026 and run through November 6, 2026! This Competition is brought to you by the Connecticut State Treasurer’s Office as Trustee of the Connecticut Higher Education Trust (CHET). Dream Big! is open to all Connecticut students in grades K-12.
This year they will be awarding $350,000 in CHET 529 College Savings Plan account contributions to over 250 students in grades K-12. With the help of a parent or guardian, students will submit an answer to a question about their dreams or how they could help their community.
This year, they will be awarding the following in CHET 529 account contributions:
• Three prizes of $20,000
• 24 prizes of $5,000
• 240 prizes of $500
Each school that is represented by at least one student’s entry will be eligible for a random drawing for a technology prize worth $5,000 (a total of 10 schools will win a technology prize).
