Another Month Done!

Another great week at E. Green.  I was impressed with the efforts your children are putting into their learning.  I enjoyed sitting in their classrooms and watching them participate in activities.  They are doing a fabulous job explaining their work and thoughts.

I am very proud of the work and learning that is taking place at E. Green.  For the second year in a row, we have been named a CT School of Distinction.  Our students have shown good growth in their learning.  I feel that this is a result of the work that our teachers do and the support that you give every day.

We are about to head into the holiday months.  I wish you and your families the best.  If there is anything that we can do for you, please let us know.

Have a great weekend.

Mr. Doran

October Students of the Month

Each month, teachers nominate a student of the month. This student displays attributes of being kind, setting a good example for others, and is an active participant in their learning. We compile all the nominees and the staff vote on our Outstanding Student of the Month who is honored at an awards' presentation at Town Hall with Dr. Brummett.

We also recognize students in our Kindergarten and Pre K. They are our Shining Stars. These are our youngest students who are learning all about the expectations of Elizabeth Green Elementary School. In their short time with us, they have done a fabulous job completing their work, being classroom leaders, and having an overall outstanding attitude.

Here are our Shining Stars:
Pre K - Luca Torone, Brooklyn Brown, and Anastasia Johnson
Kindergarten - Charlie Doherty, Maddie Goldberg, and Selina Hebreo

Things to Know

E. Green is a CT School of Distinction

I am excited to share that E. Green was once again named as a School of Distinction for the 2025-26 School Year.  We are one of two schools in Newington to be recognized.  Anna Reynolds is the other.

We have earned the designation in the area of High Growth for High Need Students in both ELA and Math.

I am very proud of the work your children have done and the learning that our teachers are facilitating.  Our partnership with you has developed a good team that has led to this recognition.  Thank you for all of your support.

Conferences are Next Week

Please do not forget about the conferences that you have scheduled with your child's teachers.  This is the opportunity to hear all about the work they are doing and the progress that they are making.  Please make sure you arrive a few minutes before your time.

Reminder: Please check the lost and found table in the lobby.  Any items left after Friday, November 6th will be donated.

When Visiting E Green.

We enjoy having parents participating in our classroom activities.  I have seen a good number of you come in and be Mystery Readers for your child's class.  When you come in, you check in and receive a pass to join your child's class.  Your child's class is expecting your visit and looking forward to having you with them.  Please do not walk to other classes that are not expecting you.  This disrupts the lessons that are being taught and the learning that is taking place.  Thank you for keeping this in mind when you visit.

Morning Drop-off Reminders

1.  Please remind your children to stop at the crosswalks and look both directions before crossing.  They should look to the adult to tell them that it is clear to cross.  We had a few students run right through the crosswalk without looking.

2.  Please have your child exit the car on the passenger side so they can hop right onto the sidewalk.  Students should not exit the vechicles until they are near the sidewalk in front of the school.  We had a few students get out on the driver's side and this puts them in the way of cars that are passing by.

Afternoon Pickups

When you come into pick up your child in the front of the building, please stay in your car and drive up with the line.  We will load your child when you get closer to the front door.  Recently, we have had families park their cars and call their children over.  They are sitting there waiting for the kids to get to the car.  This shuts down the line eof cars from moving and causes delays for the other families.  If you have someone picking up for you, please let them know that they should stay in line and follow the cars in front of them until they get up near the front door.  Thank you for your help with this.

Snacks

Reminder: Depending on the grade level, your child will have either a long morning session or a long afternoon session due to their lunchtime.  Please send in a snack for them to eat during this time as they usually are hungry during these long periods of time.  Thank you.

Transportation

  • For bus students, it is very important that all families work with children and neighbors to provide each child with a plan in the event that no one is at home when the bus arrives. Many bus stops are removed from the child’s home, and it is not reasonable to expect the bus drivers to “see” each child to his or her front door. Planning early in the year will prevent an unsettling situation for your child later. Thank you for your help. Also, our younger students (PreK and K) are required to have an adult meet them at the bus stop. Students will be returned to school for pick up if no one is there.

Information from the Nurse's Office

  • Sick Policy - Student attendance is very important and vital to a student’s success in schools. However, there are instances when your child is required to stay home from school due to an illness. Please carefully review the guidelines below.
  • Fever: May return when temperature remains under 100.0° for 24 hours WITHOUT the use of medication such as Tylenol, Ibuprofen, etc.
  • Vomiting: May return 24 hours after vomiting has ceased without any dietary restriction.
  • Diarrhea: May return 24 hours after last loose bowel movement without any dietary restriction.
  • Conjunctivitis (“pink eye”): May return 24 hours after the first dose of medication, when the eye returns to normal, or until cleared by MD to return.
  • Undiagnosed rash: May return after the rash is determined to be non-contagious by a doctor or if the rash disappears.

In addition, a child’s first 9 absences may be excused via a parent note (physical note or ParentSquare message). After 9 absences, a doctor’s note is required (unless it meets specific criteria established by the state). Any further questions or concerns please reach out to our School Nurse Kristen Miner (860) 666-3394 Ext. 1

Extra Set of Clothes
Please be sure to keep an extra set of clothes in your child’s school bag. It is very helpful for unexpected bathroom accidents, accidental food/drink spills, and/or nose bleeds. The Nurse’s office has a limited supply of clothes and you will be called if your child needs a change of clothes.

Universal School Handbook

  • This year, we will have a universal elementary school handbook.  As you read through it, you will see links to information that is important to E. Green only.  Please take a moment to review it.

Lost and Found

Once again, we will have a Lost and Found rack in the cafeteria and can be accessed by all students during their lunch wave. Please remind your child to check the rack if they come home without an item of clothing. If you have any questions, please email bfigueiredo@npsct.org.

Classroom Snacks/Celebrations

All classrooms are peanut/tree nut free. A snack containing peanut/tree nut may not be eaten in the classroom. At lunch, the cafeteria has designated tables for students with peanut/tree nut allergies. Parents of children with these allergies may opt to have your child sit at this table/s. Birthdays may be acknowledged with non-food items such as stickers, pencils, or other non-food items. Food is not accepted for birthday celebrations.

EG is a Title 1 School

Our school receives federal funds through the Title I grant. These are supplemental funds, which means they are used to provide additional resources to support identified students in achieving academic success in reading and/or math. Teachers communicate with parents/guardians of students who receive reading or math intervention and share progress throughout the year.  We also collaborate with parents and families and seek feedback to improve services.

Parents/guardians also have the right to request information about your child’s teachers’ and paraprofessionals’ professional qualifications. All teachers at our school have been certified by the state of Connecticut as highly qualified. In addition, all staff members continue learning through professional development activities and are evaluated each year to make sure their teaching skills remain at the highest possible level. Furthermore, we will provide timely notice if a student has been assigned or has been taught for four or more consecutive weeks by a teacher who does not meet applicable State certification or licensure requirements.

Community Events

School Based Health Center at NHS

Here is a service available to EG Families:

The NHS school-based health center is run by a non-profit organization, Integrated Health Services. The school-based health center is staffed with an Advanced Practicing Registered Nurse and a Licensed Social Worker during the school day at Newington High School. At this time, social work services are available to high school students only. All other services are available to all Newington students.

School-based health center services are located within the school district for your child to have better access to healthcare services. All services are available regardless of income or health care coverage. Services are aimed at, but not limited to, students who do not have access to a family doctor, whose families have little or no health care coverage, and students with state or private insurance. No child will be denied access to care because of an inability to pay. We do submit to Husky/Medicaid, which covers 100%.

The APRN provides medical services such as sick visits, routine physical exams, sports physicals and vaccine administration. Sick visits include assessment, diagnosis, and prescribing (if necessary) of strep throat, Flu, Covid, RSV, ear infections, seasonal allergies, and urinary tract infections to name just a few. The school-based health center is a licensed outpatient clinic who can provide approximately the same services as a physician's office. The goal of our services is to keep your child in school! By having these medical services in the school, it allows a child to miss less school for medical appointments. Although, this in district service does not replace your child's primary care pediatrician
